On August 19th singer/songwriter and tattoo artist H.B. Nielsen release the ethereal “FEVER DREAM”, the first single from his upcoming sophomore album FROM / HOME.
Written at the kitchen table and recorded in the living room during the pandemic winter of 2020/2021, this was his way of coping with loneliness. Longing for the people he wished were in the apartment with him caused a somewhat dreamlike state in which the spark for “FEVER DREAM” originated.
H.B. Speaks of the song: “I spent much of my time alone during the months of writing the album, and was surprised at how quickly and easily a place of solitude became the new normal state. We didn’t have a lockdown in Sweden, and I went to work as usual, but still closeness to people felt like a distant memory. “FEVER DREAM” exists somewhere between a dreamlike state of longing for connection to a loved one, and a present, somewhat self-chosen solitude.”
Standing on the musical shoulders of Swedish predecessor José González and fingerpicking folk-giant The Tallest Man on Earth, H.B. Nielsen draws heavily on Americana and folk traditions. But the music is also immersed in indie and post-rock elements with ambient delays, thick reverbs and layers of loopings in live performances. H.B. Nielsen is a visual artist, tattooer, and musician. He has lived in New York for many years but is currently based in Sweden.
On his new album there’s a sense of loss and grief: A funeral, love lost, and a dense, confusing loneliness. There’s also a lot of joy and gratitude. Strewn across the sparse, guitar-driven arrangements are sounds sampled from phone videos of friends. “FROM / HOME” will be released on October 14th on Gamlestans Grammofonbolag.
